How Stripe's fees work
How much does Stripe charge?
A US account pays 2.9% + 30¢ on each successful charge with a domestic card. An international card adds 1.5%, and converting the currency adds 1%. Subscriptions billed through Stripe Billing add 0.7%, and Stripe Tax adds 0.5% where you are registered to collect tax.
What should I charge to receive an exact amount?
Add the fixed fee to the amount you want, then divide by one minus the percentage. For $100 on a domestic card: (100 + 0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029) = $103.30. Switch to “I want to receive” above and the calculator does this for you, to the cent.
Why is the rate higher on small amounts?
The 30¢ is the same on every charge. On $100 it adds 0.3%; on $5 it adds 6%, so a $5 charge costs about 8.9% in total.
Is Stripe cheaper than a merchant of record?
On the fee alone, usually yes. But with Stripe you are the seller, so registering for, collecting and filing sales tax and VAT wherever it is owed is your job. A merchant of record charges more and does that for you.
